The traditional Palestinian embroidered dress, also known as the thobe, has traceable origins from the beginning of the sixteenth century and tatreez, or embroidery, has an iconographical and symbolic significance that ultimately dates back to Chinese symbols found around 5,000 BC. Waste canvas is the most traditional form of embroidery guidance used by Palestinian embroideries for at least the last two centuries. Guided by Wafa Ghnaim, learn the waste-canvas technique by embroidering a small size chest panel on a blouse, drawstring pouch, tote bag, and more.
Learn how to implement waste canvas for small to medium projects, use it and remove it, learn the running and traditional cross-stitch, transfer a medium-sized pattern onto fabric using waste canvas, develop your own style, stitching strategies to execute the cleanest outcome on fabric, and learn tips and tricks unique to the motif and size of fabric.
You are welcome to use any non-stretchable fabric. Open to students of all skill levels, beginner Tatreez & Tea class (Level I) recommended.
