Museum Week
During the upcoming congressional recess, American History TV and Washington Journal will be LIVE from five D.C.-area museums highlighting selected collections and exhibits exploring the American story. Museum officials will field viewer calls and tweets.
Each day, we'll be LIVE on Washington Journal from 9 - 10am ET, with a replay each evening on American History TV at 8pm ET.
Here's the line-up:
Monday, February 17 - Presidents' Day
George Washington's Mount Vernon, Northern Virginia
Historian Doug Bradburn joins us from Mount Vernon's Museum and Education Center to talk about George Washington's vision for the presidency. We'll learn about the library, home and museum, and see reenactors prepare to celebrate the first president's birthday on the mansion grounds. Mr. Bradburn is President & CEO of the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, which manages George Washington's Mount Vernon. (This program will also simulcast on C-SPAN3's American History TV).
Tuesday, February 18
National Museum of the Marine Corps - Quantico, Virgina
Seventy-five years ago, in early 1945, the U.S. Marines invaded the Pacific island of Iwo Jima and fought Japanese forces in one of the bloodiest battles of World War II. The National Museum of the Marine Corps will display the two flags which were raised on Iwo Jima, and museum curator Owen Conner and Marine Corps historian Edward Nevgloski will take questions about the battle and other Marine Corps history.
Wednesday, February 19
Smithsonian National Museum of American History - Washington, D.C.
We'll mark the 19th Amendment's centennial with Anthea Hartig, the museum's first female director since it opened in 1964. She'll take questions about the long campaign to win women the vote, the struggle for women's rights and the artifacts in their custody that tell the story, including a slogan-covered wagon suffragists used to press their case.
Thursday, February 20
Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian - Washington, D.C.
Director Kevin Gover joins us in the "Americans" exhibit to talk about the museum's history, artifacts, and issues of importance to Native Americans today.
Friday, February 21
Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture - Washington, D.C.
Military history guest curator Krewasky Salter joins us from the exhibit, "We Return Fighting: The African American Experience in World War I." He'll introduce us to the African American soldiers who served during what was then called "the Great War," and talk about how their experiences served as a catalyst for the civil rights movement.
