1 MARCXML file (Title level metadata) + Item level metadata + Page level metadata = 1 Digital book or volume

BHL harvests all metadata via the Internet Archive (IA) and delivers selected metadata elements through the BHL website (http://biodiversitylibrary.org). IA requires title level metadata to be submitted as a MARCXML record. Item level metadata, such as the "Holding Institution" and "Copyright Status" information, must be manually assigned for each book or volume. Page level metadata, such as Recto/Verso and “Page 65,” are added by IA digitization technicians or by your institution's staff via Macaw.

If you work directly with IA as your digitization vendor,
----IA collects the MARC records (title level metadata) directly from your library catalog via Z39.50 protocol "Z-fetch"
----IA requires that you submit item level metadata in the form of a "Partner Meta App"
----IA will perform the page level metadata collection for you.		Macaw helps facilitate the collection of title, item, and page level metadata for export to Internet Archive. After materials from Macaw make it to IA, they can be harvested to BHL's website.

BHL Metadata Requirements documentationDetailed narrative of BHL Partner metadata requirements for established digitization workflows. The careful preparation and review of metadata is a critical step of any organization’s digitization workflow. Additionally, data curation of your institution’s collection in BHL should be viewed as an iterative process whose aim is to facilitate effective searching, browsing, discovery, and identification for BHL’s end-users. Ensuring that the metadata your organization contributes to BHL, and ultimately the world, conforms to BHL’s metadata requirements will translate into more people seeing, sharing and using your content.

Title - MARC21Describes the title level metadata required to submit books or volumes to BHL's collection. Title level metadata is supplied in the form of MARCXML. Selected metadata elements are then harvested to BHL's database and displayed via the BHL website.

IA - Item - PMA CSVDescribes the item level (individual book or volume) metadata required to submit books or volumes to BHL's collection. Working with Internet Archive, item level metadata is supplied in the form of a .csv file called the "Partner Meta App (PMA)." Each row in the PMA represents an item (book or volume) and each column represents a field label in IA. Custom fields such as "year" and "copy-specific-information" can be added to the PMA for submission to IA.

Macaw - Title/Item - WebformDescribes the title and item level metadata required to submit books or volumes to BHL's collection through Macaw -- the Metadata Collection and Workflow tool developed by Smithsonian Libraries and Archives. Title and item level metadata are entered via Macaw's web form. Title level metadata is supplied in the form of a MARCXML file, either copy/pasted or uploaded via Macaw's webform.

Macaw - Page - CSVRather than manually assigning page level metadata via Macaw, this CSV describes the metadata required to submit page level metadata in bulk for a single item to Macaw -- the Metadata Collection and Workflow tool developed by Smithsonian Libraries and Archives. Page level metadata can only be entered for one item per .csv file. Each row represents a page and each column represents a field label in Macaw.
